Frequently asked questions
Is Social Security deducted before or after 401(k)?
401(k) deferrals are subject to Social Security and Medicare tax. Only §125 deductions (health/dental premiums, HSA) reduce your FICA taxable wages.
Why does my actual paycheck differ?
This calculator spreads your annual liability evenly across periods. Employers use IRS Publication 15-T withholding tables, which front-load slightly differently, and local taxes (e.g., Ohio school district, NYC resident tax) are excluded here.
Which states have no income tax on wages?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming do not tax wage income in 2026.
